How to Sleep Well on Vacation

Do you sleep well on vacation?  If you’re like most people, the odds are that you don’t get a great rest every night.  Even if you head away to the most relaxing place in the world, it’s still unlikely that you’ll sleep soundly each night.  Many people experience these difficulties when we’re away from home.  This is the case regardless of whether we’re staying a few blocks away or on the other side of the planet.

A Sleepy Travel Trend

Unfortunately, when you don’t sleep well on vacation, it can take away from your enjoyment. It means you won’t feel as energized to see all the sites you had on your itinerary.  It can be difficult to want to keep going. Furthermore, it may even be hard on your mood.  Then, when you get home, it can feel as though you need to take time off to recover from what was supposed to be a restful trip.

How to Sleep Well on Vacation

Being able to sleep well on vacation doesn’t take any special skills.  That said, it can take a little bit of planning and strategy.  Use the following tips to make sure you get the rest you need.  This will help you enjoy your trip and come home feeling rejuvenated.

  • Relax in the evenings – Before bed, try to make a conscious effort to wind down. Have a warm bath.  If you’re staying in a luxury villa with a hot tub, take advantage of that feature. Write in a journal.  Use a meditation app.  Plan what you want to do the next day so you can release any stress relating to uncertainty.
  • Be consistent with home – Consider the things you do at home to start to relax before bedtime. Do you have a certain pair of slippers you wear before bedtime? Do you usually wind down with a book? Do you diffuse a little lavender essential oil into the air? Do you have a cup of herbal tea? If you do, try to be consistent with as many of those activities as you can to sleep well on vacation, too.
  • Schedule when you can – As much as possible, try to wake, eat and head to bed at the same time every day. Certainly, this may not be possible every time as your activities for a specific day may shift things around a little. That said, keeping an eating and sleeping schedule is handy for making sure you’re restful when you should be. It can also be very helpful in overcoming jet lag.
