
For many of us, the idea of being able to get to sleep without the struggle sounds like a dream unto itself. With our busy lives and incredible amounts of time spent in front of screens, it can be a wonder if we get any rest at all.

Create a routine – this should specifically involve the use of your clock. The reason is that your body’s own sleep clock is currently broken. Fix it by resetting it. This involves going to bed and getting up at the same time every day, even on weekends. If you do nap, make them short power naps of about 15 minutes in length. They’re meant to give you a bit of a boost, not to provide you the equivalent to an entire night of rest. Anything longer will only cause you to drag and will make it harder to sleep at night.
Pay attention to light exposure – your body naturally responds to light in ways you likely didn’t realize. Exposure to light signals to your body that it should be awake, while exposure to darkness encourages sleepiness. This is because when light exposure is reduced, your body starts to produce melatonin – a hormone associated with your natural sleeping and waking clock. Therefore, one to two hours before bedtime, shut off all your screens (yes, including your cell phone) and try to keep room lighting dim. Similarly, when you wake up, it’s great to throw open the blinds and let daylight shine in. That will help to teach your body when night time is occurring – and therefore when you should be asleep.
Exercise and eat right – try to eat nutrient dense foods and get some form of exercise every day. Believe it or not, this makes a considerable difference in your body’s ability to achieve a proper rest at night. These functions all work together when it comes to both energy and sleeping.
